The blue garden Yves Saint Laurent saved

4.5 (13,640 verified reviews · GetYourGuide)

Cacti, lily pools and a villa painted Majorelle blue, behind the walls Jacques Majorelle began planting in 1923.

Guests love the colours and the calm, a quiet blue escape from the noise of the medina.

Do you need to book ahead?

Do you need to book the Majorelle Garden in advance?

The short answer

Yes. The garden's website says tickets can only be purchased online and advises reserving well in advance to be sure of your date and time. A press release on the same site says the on-site ticket offices stopped operating from 30 January 2023. This ticket books entry to the garden alone.

How entry works

You pick a date and a time on the booking page. The voucher is not your ticket: QR-code tickets are emailed one day before the visit, so a valid, reachable email address matters. Bring a passport or an ID card. There is no meeting point, and you enter on your own.

What it is, and what it is not

It is entry to the Majorelle Garden: the blue villa, the cacti and the pools. It does not include the Yves Saint Laurent Museum or the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts, which need their own tickets. The combined listing is covered further down.

Plan for a shift

Your entrance time may be adjusted 30 minutes earlier or later than the one you asked for. If the garden closes for maintenance, safety or weather, the booking page says no refunds or discounts are available.

What you walk through

Six parts of the garden

What the garden's own website, Wikipedia and the booking page say you walk through.

  1. Walls

    Alleys behind a wall

The garden's website says it is enclosed by outer walls and made of crisscrossing alleyways on different levels, with boldly coloured buildings that blend Art Deco and Moorish influences.

  2. Villa

    The blue Cubist villa

Wikipedia says Jacques Majorelle commissioned the architect Paul Sinoir in 1931 to design a Cubist villa for the grounds. The cobalt shade that covers it is named bleu Majorelle after him.

  3. Studio

    The former painting studio

The garden's website says the Berber Museum, inaugurated in 2011, is housed in Majorelle's former painting studio. The museum needs its own ticket and is not part of the garden-only entry.

  4. Cacti

    The cactus collection

Wikipedia calls the garden's collection of cacti notable. The garden's website says Majorelle began planting it with exotic specimens from the far corners of the world.

  5. Water

    Pools and fountains

The booking page lists water features and fountains among the planting, and Wikipedia says the garden has many fountains.

  6. Memory

    Saint Laurent and Bergé

The garden's website says Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought it in 1980 to save it from hotel developers. Wikipedia adds that Saint Laurent's ashes were scattered in the garden after his death in 2008.

The garden's website describes alleyways on different levels, so the order in which you meet these is up to you.

Watch your inbox the day before

The booking voucher is not your entry ticket. QR-code tickets are sent by email one day before your visit, so give an address you can reach and check your spam folder.

    Bring ID and walk in

Bring a passport or an ID card. There is no meeting point for this ticket: you go to the garden's entrance on Rue Yves Saint Laurent and enter on your own.

    Inside

Walk it at your own pace

The booking page gives one hour for the visit. A reviewer notes that no information is displayed as you wander, so read about the garden before you go if its history or plants interest you.

Getting there and what to bring

Reaching the garden, and what to carry

Where it is

The garden's address is Rue Yves Saint Laurent, 40090 Marrakech. Wikipedia places it in the Guéliz district of Marrakesh.

From the medina

Wikipedia describes Marrakesh's old fortified city as the medina quarter, home of the Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the souks, and places the garden in Guéliz, a different district. Put the address into a map app or show it to a taxi driver.

Next door

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum's website says it stands a stone's throw from the garden. It has its own ticket.

What to bring

A passport or an ID card, and your QR codes. Leave luggage and large bags behind and bring no food: the garden has its own café, open the same hours as the garden.

Photography

Commercial photography and video are not allowed.

Crowds

The booking page warns of longer waits in peak seasons. Reviewers describe crowds at the entrance and a calmer garden once inside.

If plans change

Cancelling up to five days ahead returns your money in full.
